Beginners → kitesurfing safety
The first step for a beginner would be to take a Beginners course taught by a competent scholar. You can read more about scholars here.
Here are some basic guidelines:
- Only fly your kite in open water(sea, very big lakes etc.)
- Pick surfing spots carefully, avoid crowded beaches. A kitesurfer avoids land breeze!
- Before inflating your kite, be sure to read the instruction manual that came with your kite (all kites are NOT the same).
- Only set your foot water if you are a skilled swimmer and wear a proper lifejacket that suits your body.
- There is no universal kite for all-weather use. Bigger wind = smaller kite, so please adhere to the wind speed limits of your kite.
- Make sure that your kite beam has a so-called ''safety system'', with which you can release yourself from the kite.
- Only use a ''quick-release'' kite leash , with which you can release yourself from the kite, in case things turn sour.
- Never tie kite lines around your arms or other bodyparts (doing so usually ends very badly)
- Avoid surfing spots in close proximity to power lines, phone lines, airports, highways, big houses and trees.
- Always wear a helmet! - especially if you use a surfboard that is ''leashed'' onto you.
- Pay close attention when attaching lines to your kite – a small error can have serious consequences (best check several times to make sure that nothing is tangled up or wronly attached)
- Take into account that the Baltic Sea is rocky!
- Despite the lack of proper sunshine in Estonia, using sunscreen is recommended. Hours in the water pass swiftly and wind together with the sun shining behind the clouds might still give you a tan.
- Never go surfing alone!
